What is a vanity URL?

A Facebook vanity URL is just like a typical website URL — every site on the internet has its own URL that reflects its brand name.

Similarly, when you create a Facebook Business page, you’ll have your own business page vanity URL, also known as a ‘username’. This gives you an identity among the sea of other businesses on Facebook.

However, this URL is usually given by default and contains a string of numbers or letters, like facebook.com/pages/yourbusiness/123456ABC. Though there isn’t a huge issue with the default URL, changing it to something like facebook.com/yourbusiness adds a sense of professionalism and brand identity.

Why do you need a Facebook vanity URL?

Before going into further details, it’s important to know why you need a vanity URL.

Though the changing of this link is totally optional, long URLs with numbers don’t reflect well on your business page. After all, seeing a string of numbers and letters behind your actual name seems messy and uncoordinated.

As mentioned earlier, having a clean and neat URL will help you come off as professional and also improve your brand identity.

2 steps to create a Facebook page vanity URL

Creating a Facebook vanity URL is not difficult, but you must be an admin to create or change the username for your page. If you aren’t an admin yet, contact your administrator to change the page roles.

Step 1: Navigate to your Facebook Settings

Navigate to your page settings from the bar on the left of the page.

Firstly, access the page settings from the bar on the left of the page. You should see a list of options under the “Manage Page” tab. Under this section scroll down and expand the “settings” as shown.

Click on the 'Page information' tab.

Once you’ve opened your page settings, visit the “page info” section. Upon opening it you will see a variety of page details. This page contains your page name, description, and username.

All the page information for you to handle the identity of the page is modified here.

Step 2: Edit username

Enter a suitable username. This will be your vanity URL

The next step is to choose a suitable username for your Facebook page. This will become your vanity URL.

Here are some points to consider when thinking of a new username:

  • Usernames can only include alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) or a period (.).
  • You can only have one username per page.
  • Usernames cannot containing eneric terms or extensions (.com, .net).
  • Usernames must be at least 5 characters long.
  • Usernames are not transferrable or editable.
  • You can’t claim a username someone else is already using. If your trademarked name has already been taken, you can notify Facebook of this intellectual property infringement.
  • Usernames have to adhere to Facebook’s terms and conditions.

Once you are done with entering a username that is approved by the field authenticator with a green tick mark, congratulations! This username will now become part of your page URL.

How do I change my vanity URL?

Now if you’ve already created a vanity URL in the past and you want to change it, you’d be happy to know it isn’t difficult either!

Step 1: Edit Page information

To change the existing vanity URL for your page, click on the “Edit Page Info”.
